Why are we rallying?
The planet and all the people and living things on it need us to unite and commit to real action on climate change.
The Australian Government is not taking adequate measures to ensure a safe climate for us and future generations. We need to convince the
1. 40% cuts in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
Best available climate science is calling on developed countries to reduce their emissions by at least 40% by 2020 (based on 1990 levels) to avoid dangerous climate change.
2. 100% renewable energy by 2020
Australia must shift to 100% renewable energy from wind, solar and other sources in the next decade, Tasmania in particular is in an excellent position to do this.
3. Green collar jobs with a just transition for workers
We can renew our economy by creating tens of thousands of 'green jobs' and supporting workers to make the shift to sustainable industries.
4. A strong international agreement with climate justice for all
Australia must take the lead in global climate talks - a 5-25% target is not enough! Australia must agree to a 40% target if we are to ensure a safe climate for our children. We must show the world we are serious about doing our fair share and support developing countries, who are least responsible for climate change and already suffering its effects.
Forests absorb carbon out of the atmosphere and store it safely in their trunks, roots, branches, woody debris and soil. When these forests are logged or burnt this carbon goes back into the atmosphere. Protecting Australia's native forests and woodlands is vital to reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Who is supporting the Rally?
The Rally is an initiative of Australia's Climate Action Summit, where over 140 community climate groups came together in Canberra in February 2009 to plan community action on climate change. There will be rallies in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Canberra and Hobart on the same day.
Climate Action Hobart is organising this event as part of the national climate movement. Climate Action Hobart is a group of individual Tasmanians who are dedicated to ensuring a safe climate for all people and nature.
This event is also supported by Environment Tasmania, Sustainable Living Tasmania, Wilderness Society Tasmania and: The Australian Education Union, The Maritime Union of Tasmania, The United Firefigters Union of Australia - Tasmanian Branch, The Tasmanian Grassroots Union Choir, Greenpeace Tasmania, Socialist Alliance, Resistance, Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania, Huon Valley Environment Centre, Vegetarian Tasmania and Still Wild Still Threatened.
